The Finns certainly love their sweets and chocolate: the average Finn consumes 14 kilos of sweets and chocolate every year. Many of the popular Finnish sweets go back decades, some of them even over a century. For example, the Sisu spirit coin was created in 1928, but there are some candy classics that are even older than the ones pictured. Probably the only candy with an even more iconic status than the Sisu is the Fazer Blue chocolate, which has been selected several times as the most respected consumer brand in Finland. Another popular chocolate candy, especially at Christmas time, is the peppermint crust Marianne, which was created by Chymos in the late 1940s. Chymos, as well as Hellas and several other original manufacturers have since disappeared from the candy markets. But many classic candy products are still going strong, regardless of changes in their manufacturers, package designs, and sometimes even recipes. Apart from that, some of the most loved traditional candy makers still continue to provide us with goodies both old and new as seen in the picture.
